What causes depression?
Cognitive-behavioral therapy or CBT is an effective psychological treatment of mental and emotional problems. As a psychiatrist in Edinburgh CBT techniques I use to treat depression, and I see a lot of customers feel low and unhappy. They are often asked if I feel it is printed, and that caused them to feel that way. These questions have asked me about this account number.
The term "depression" means different things to different people. Apsychiatrists, "depression" is synonymous with "clinical depression, a mental illness with a number (rather loose and many preferred) symptoms and its clinical course and prognosis. For most of the rest of us, "depression" simply means feeling very low.
Depression, in a sense is common. Statistics vary as is common, but a number in the range of 50% for the permanent risk of clinical depression is commonly found. Thismeans that most of us has a chance to experience two clinical depression in our lives. Similarly, in a time between 10% and 20% of the adult population meets the criteria for depression. These numbers are increasing for many years and is expected to continue to grow in the future. It may seem as if the whole world (particularly the industrialized part of it) is hit by an epidemic of depression.
The reasons for thiswidespread and growing incidence of depression is still unclear and depends largely on who to ask! The following is a brief summary of the main competitors.
Many psychiatrists (and pharmaceutical companies) focuses on genetic and biochemical factors in depression – has stressed the obvious answer to depression and depression antidepressants and electro-convulsive therapy (ECT). See depression as abrain disease.
In contrast, other researchers and workers (such as social theorists and social workers) emphasizes the role of society and its immediate surroundings causes of depression. They assumed that a stressful life conditions and social situation is likely to lead to depression . They point out that differences in rates of depression among different social groups (which are significantly higher depression and suicidein lower socioeconomic groups) as proof of this environment. This understanding of the issues in a set of very different "treatment" of the recommendations – not tablets of antidepressants, but the socio-economic support, better housing and jobs.
Finally, the cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT or) focus on people think as a possible cause for depression. The theory is that people prone to depression tend to think in a particular kind of "depressed"ways, and when these people experience side effects (or you think something bad happened), so it is with great risk of becoming depressed. An example of "depression" negative thinking habit is a filter, where a person can "see" or "counts" only the bad things or bad, its experience and good prices. A CBT therapist would call this idea "to think evil. Think about the way the world looks and it seems imminentdrop – and it's a small step from there to feel depressed. A CBT therapist aims to identify the person and to help their "depressed" habits of thought are changing.
As mentioned, the causes of depression is not yet known – we have some good hypotheses, but psychological and emotional problems are extremely difficult to study and reach a final decision. And there are many more cases – from viral theories of depression in lightdeprivation of food shortages.
Suffice it to say that since our current level of knowledge, it seems prudent to assume that there are probably many causes of depression, working alone or in tandem. In fact, most mental health professionals a model multi-factorial mental space for the physical, environmental (social) and psychological factors. Treatment for depression should be offered (but unfortunately often is not) reflect thiscomplexity. In particular, there remains a lack of psychological therapy available on the NHS. Many customers who see it as a private psychiatrist in Edinburgh is not willing to wait months for your help.
